UC Berke­ley School of Jour­nal­ism

Background:

Vis­it­ing Pro­fes­sor John Bat­telle, founder of The Indus­try Stan­dard mag­a­zine, teach­es a course at the Grad­u­ate School of Jour­nal­ism that has the stu­dents cre­at­ing an issue of the media com­men­tary mag­a­zine The Big Sto­ry.

Challenge:

Work­ing with stu­dent edi­tors, pub­lish a full-col­or, 64-page mag­a­zine for news­stand sale that bal­anced our ideas and themes with those of the stu­dents.

Solution:

We changed the orig­i­nal trim size to save on costs and made design updates to make the mag­a­zine more con­tem­po­rary in look and feel.

Results:

The mag­a­zine was pub­lished in time for grad­u­a­tion to great response from stu­dents and fac­ul­ty.
